form of a trunk section of a pine tree, the exterior depicting
a pair of deer’s resting amongst gnarled branches laden with
clusters of needles, the surface patinated to a warm reddish-
brown colour

of cylindrical form, the exterior well carved in low relief
depicting the lavishly dressed Er Qiao, one lying on an
intricately carved daybed beside a large lotus arrangement, the
other seated holding a book between them, the reverse with
a twenty-character excerpt from Lu Qingzi’s poem, denoting
the astonishing beauty of the Qiao sisters, followed by the
characters Tianru Nianweng (an old man of Heaven’s age) and
signed Zifan, the patina of a rich reddish-brown colour
