MING DYNASTY, CHENGHUA
PERIOD, DATED TO 1478
heavily cast with slightly spreading sides flaring towards the
base and surmounted by a pair of addorsed dragons, modelled
with powerful extended front claws and open mouths revealing
pointed fangs, the body cast in relief with two horizontal
bands enclosing rectangular panels divided by vertical flanges,
inscribed to the lower band with the nine-character inscription
Chenghua shisi nian wuyue jiri (The auspicious day during the
fourteenth year and fifth month of Chenghua), the opposite
side inscribed with Shen Zhangzhi zhi feng (installed and
dedicated by Zhangzhi), the metal patinated to a dark grey

QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD
the compressed globular body supported on three conical
ruyi feet and rising to a short everted rim, finely cast in
low-relief around the exterior with a pair of shou characters
flanked by dragons and divided at the shoulder by a pair of
chilong handles, the base cast with an apocryphal Xuande six-
character mark, the domed cover pierced with taotie masks
and lotus lappet bands and surmounted by a coiled dragon
finial
