           A ‘CIZHOU’ CARVED ‘PEONY’ PILLOW
           11TH/12TH CENTURY

           the octagonal facetted body with slightly dished top, carved
           through the white slip with two large peony blossoms borne
           on a leafy stem, all reserved on a punched ground, similarly
           carved to the sides with two rectangular panels enclosing
           quatrefoil panels of flowers and covered overall with a glaze of
           ivory tone that falls to the foot, the flat base unglazed
           27.5 cm, 10⅞ in.
