CATALOGUE NOTE

The construction of the base, the integral casting of the taotie masks, the overall finish, and even the colour all closely
follow Han Dynasty prototypes. There are, however, noticeable differences: the overall modelling has a touch of
pottery about it; the taotie masks are not so fearsome, but instead more benevolent and aesthetic, and the three
projections on the lid, which act as feet when the lid is turned upside-down, are freely interpreted features not found
on Han dynasty vessels.
