322 A wood and lacquer netsuke of a kappa breaking
out from an egg. Second half 19th century
The water sprite looks out from an upright egg, the
shell covered by silvery lacquer, the hair, the eye
pupils and the lining of the cord holes lacquered
shiny black.

323 A fine large boxwood netsuke of a tengu no
tamago. 19th century or later
The grim-looking karasu tengu emerges from a
cracked egg, one claw pulling out his right wing
while the other claw rests on the shell. The eyes
of light and black horn. Restored.

324 A boxwood netsuke of a long-nosed tengu.
19th century
Dressed as a yamabushi with cap and yuigesa, the
back covered by crow’s wings, and sitting in front of
a mortar (suribachi) using his long nose as a pestle
(surikogi). Age crack.
Grinding in a mortar is a sexual allusion.
