                   A CARVED BAIFURONG SOAPSTONE
                   SEAL
                   QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
                   The top of the oval seal is carved with a
                   crouching mythical beast. One side of the seal
                   is incised with an inscription, fang huai qie du
                   gu ren shu (study the ancient scripts without
                   constraint), which is repeated on the seal
                   face. The inscription on the side is followed by
                   a signature Zuozhou. The stone is of slightly
                   mottled creamy-white color.
                   2 in. (5 cm.) high, cloth box
                   $6,000-8,000
                   Zuozhou is the hao/sobriquet of Zha
                   Zhong’gao, a Qing scholar who was known
                   for his carving and painting executed in the
                   style of Yun Shouping.

                   scroll in his left hand, and wearing a belted
                   robe carved with floral pattern and shou
                   medallions.
