The Gump Family Collection, San Francisco.
EXHIBITED:
Alamo, California, International Jewelers Association, circa 1997.
Sir Ellice Victor Sassoon was a wealthy businessman and hotelier from the Sassoon
banking family. Sassoon traveled frequently in India and the Far East, where he
nurtured extensive business interests, including founding the Cathay Hotel (now
the Peace Hotel) on The Bund, Shanghai, in 1929. Sir Victor was an avid collector of
Asian art, and his collection of Chinese ivories was particularly impressive.
The Gump Family opened an emporium in San Francisco in 1861, initially supplying
furnishings to residences during the Gilded Age, and later expanding into gift wares,
silver, stationery and Asian art. The store attracted wealthy clientele of customers
from around the world, who relished visits to the famed Gump Jade Room. Gump's
is credited with popularizing the collecting of high quality jade in America. Richard
Gump published Jade, Stone of Heaven in 1962, which became a popular reference
volume for jade collectors.
