A SANCAI-GLAZED HEAVILY LADEN CAMEL WITH MONKEY
RIDER
Sui Dynasty
Modeled with its short neck and small head crowned with a thick,
generous ruff under the neck extending to the top of the front legs,
and repeated on the generous humps fitted with a wide saddle collar
tied with voluminous packs, pack boards and flasks surmounted
by a single monkey in the pose of a driver, the body of the camel
covered in layers of amber and green glaze degraded to an olive shade
contrasting with the brown wash applied to the ruff, the saddle spotted
with green cream and amber.
