                                                                          AN ARCHAIC RITUAL BRONZE BELL, YONG
                                                                          Eastern Zhou Dynasty
                                                                          Of lenticular shape with a flat top and beveled
                                                                          rim, each side cast with a plain panel flanked by
                                                                          rows of three bosses alternating stylized 'dragon'
                                                                          patterns, the lower register with a mirror image
                                                                          of intwined dragons, the top flat, the handle with
                                                                          collars between 'dragon' panels above a raised
                                                                          band which projects a tiger head to form a ring, the
                                                                          two-line inscriptions of 16- and 11-character incised
                                                                          on either side of the central panel, the bronze with
                                                                          smooth patina and encrusted earth.

                                                                          A bronze yong bell of closely related entwined
                                                                          dragon design is illustrated by Jenny F. So, Eastern
                                                                          Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler
                                                                          Collections, Volume III, New York, 1995, pp. 378-
                                                                          381, no. 78, described as Eastern Zhou: late Spring
                                                                          and Autumn period, early 5th century B.C.
                                                                          Compare the closely related bronze yong bell with
                                                                          entwined dragon design, from the Avery Brundage
                                                                          Collection and now in the collection of the Asian Art
                                                                          Museum of San Francisco, illustrated by Lefebvre
                                                                          d'Argence, Ancient Chinese Bronzes in the Avery
                                                                          Brundage Collection, Berkley, 1966, pp. 102-
                                                                          103, Plate XLVI-A, noted by the author that "its
                                                                          components rely almost entirely on prototypes that
                                                                          can be traced back to the late Western Chou period
                                                                          ..., but its decor is similar to that of a typical Early
                                                                          Warring States bell."
