A famille rose blue-ground ‘medallion’ bowl
Daoguang seal mark and of the period
The exterior carefully enamelled with four scenes inside medallions, one
with the Cowherd riding a buffalo amongst magpies and the opposite
medallion with the Weaver Girl standing amidst clouds and a flock of
magpies, the remaining two medallions with figures in a garden, all against
a blue-enamelled sgraffiato ground with cloud scrolls, the interior painted
in underglaze blue with the Weaver Girl addressing the Cowherd over the
bridge of magpies in the well, surrounded by ruyi-shaped cloud scrolls and
four further birds on the sides, wood stand.

The present bowl celebrates the Qixi Festival, also known as Magpie Festival, Victoria and a personal friend of Sultan Abdu el Hamid, the Khedive of Egypt
which falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month on the lunar
calendar. Chinese tradition tells the story of a young cowherd known as
Niulang who falls in love with a beautiful girl called Zhinü, the seventh
daughter of the Goddess, whose task was to weave colourful clouds. The
Goddess was furious at their attachment and scratched a wide river in the
sky with her hairpin to separate the two lovers forever, thus forming the
Milky Way. However once a year all the magpies in the world fly up into
heaven to form a bridge so that the lovers may be together for a single
night.
Medallion bowls from the Daoguang period are particularly fine and highly

A famille rose blue-ground vase
Jiaqing seal mark and of the period
Vibrantly enamelled around the body in rose enamels on a deep blue ground
with four fully-blossoming lotus amid foliate scrolls alternating with four
stylised turquoise flowers suspending a pink tasselled bat-shaped pendant
above another further flower issuing a foliate bud between a row of ruyi-head
at the foot and shoulder, the neck similarly enamelled with two full lotus
blooms alternating with two opening blossoms supporting a dish containing
a peach beneath the simple iron-red and gilt scroll handles flanking two
pendent tasselled musical stones, the lip curving outwards and enamelled
with floral scrolls beneath the gilt mouth.
