A famille rose ‘lychees’ bowl
Daoguang seal mark and of the period
Finely potted with deep rounded sides rising
to a slightly flaring rim, the exterior brightly
enamelled in pink, yellow, green and coral-
red with a delicately-painted butterfly in
flight above bursting lychees issuing from
leafy branches next to sprouting bamboo,
the interior similarly decorated, wood stand.

the 19th century and thence by descent.

As a homonym for establishing a son, lychee
(lizhi 荔枝) is an auspicious motif for the
blessing to have a son in order to continue
the family’s last name. It also symbolises
‘clever’ since the first character of lychee is a
pun on the character 俐(li).
