The Buddha’s-hand citron 佛手 foshou is a pun for abundant blessings
多福 duofu; the pomegranate 石榴 shiliu, with its many seeds,
represents the wish for many sons; and the peach 桃tao represents long
life. Together, these three fruit are known as the Three Abundances,
a concept dating back to the Zhuangzi text from the Warring States
period, and expresses the wish 福壽三多 fushou sanduo ‘May you have
an abundance of blessings, long life and sons’.
