A zitan mounted cinnabar lacquer table screen with hardstone embellishments
Late Qing/Republic Period
The rectangular panel elegantly designed with a caparisoned white Provenance:
elephant supporting a potted jar of magnolia blossoms and flanked by a acquired in China by an American missionary family before 1945 and
branch of buddha’s hand citron on the right and potted narcissus on the thence by descent to the present through a private family collection
left, the features rendered in mother-of-pearl, jade, turquoise, lapis and
wood on a fine network of floral patterns in cinnabar lacquer, the scene
reversed by a long poem and bearing a Qianlong yuzhi mark, the panel
fitted into a zitan frame skillfully carved with a key fret and c-comma
segment panel and supported by addorsed dragon-headed brackets
joined to an elaborate carved lotus headed apron.
