A large ink stone
Late Qing/Republic Period
The thick, rectangular duan stone finely carved in low relief with a large
hu-form vase bearing elegant ruyi-shaped handles separated by a key fret
band and rendered on a leiwen ground, set into a rectangular hongmu
vase and cover, the cover inscribed haishang sheng ming yue ‘born above
the sea under a bright moon’, signed Guofan.

A zitan mounted ‘cong’-form censer
Late Qing/Republic Period
The rectangular vessel carved in the form of an archaic Chinese jade cong,
with four faux vertical segments framing a central abstract taotie mask,
the circular aperture set with a gilt metal liner, the wood a rich honey-
brown color and raised on a circular base enclosing a three character hall
mark inscribed fuchen tang.

Provenance:
acquired in China by an American missionary family before 1945 and
thence by descent to the present through a private family collection
