AN UNDERGLAZE-BLUE AND PUCE-ENAMELLED
‘IMMORTALS’ BOWL
Daoguang six-character mark and of the period
Well-potted with rounded sides rising from a slightly tapered foot, Earlier productions of this design were done in underglaze-blue and
painted on the exterior in underglaze-blue with the Eight Daoist underglaze-copper-red. See, for example, the three ingot-shaped
Immortals crossing the sea, each with their unique attributes and bowls in this catalogue, lot 168. In later productions of Daoguang
vehicles, the cresting waves painted in puce enamel above a band of through Xuantong periods, the underglaze-copper-red element was
keyfret at the foot, all within underglaze-blue line borders, the interior replaced by overglaze dark-purple enamel, resulting a more striking
similarly decorated with a center medallion of Shoulao and a deer, and uniform appearance.
Daoguang six-character mark in underglaze-blue within double circle
at base. Compare the very similar Guangxu-marked bowl illustrated in the
8in (22.3cm) diam; 2in (7 cm) high catalogue of the exhibition Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing from the
Kwan Collection, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
$4,000 - 6,000 1983, p. 114, no. 112. Another Guangxu-marked bowl of the same
decoration is illustrated by Avitable, From the Dragon’s Treasure,
