A BROWN AND GREEN NEPHRITE SNUFF BOTTLE                                    AN AGATE ‘COIN’ SNUFF BOTTLE
1740-1850                                                                  Probably imperial, attributed to the palace workshops, 1798–1840
Of upright rectangular form with a wide lip, slightly concave and a high   Of flattened globular form, with a straight neck and flat lip, the oval
oval foot rim, the principle face of the bottle carved to feature a rider  foot rim surrounding a recessed foot, carved with the obverse and
on a water buffalo approaching a bridge, with a figure leaning out a       reverse of a Mexican eight-reale coin, complete with its milled edge,
window, the details of the carving well-executed, with russet inclusions   bearing the head of Charles IV of Spain encircled by the legend
along the foot rim.                                                        CAROLUS•IIII•DEI•GRATIA•1796, the reverse with the Spanish coat
2 5/8in (6.5cm) high                                                       of arms encircled with the legend HISPAN•ETIND•REX•M•8R•F•M•
                                                                           the Latin inscription notably crisp, the narrow sides with oval panels,
