The current paintings are immediately inspired by the imperial
publication Yuzhi Gengzhi tu, ‘Pictures of Tilling and Weaving’, executed 御筆為藍本。耕織圖題材常見於十八世紀的出口畫,深受西方市場歡迎。
by the Qing court painter Leng Mei (fig. 1), who was active at court
during the late 17th to early 18th century. Leng Mei’s work in turn
was based on the original Gengzhi tu by another court painter, Jiao
Bingzhen (active c. 1680-1720), commissioned by the Kangxi Emperor.
It contained 23 illustrations of agriculture and 23 illustrations of
sericulture, each accompanied by the Kangxi Emperor’s seven-character
quatrains. Woodblock prints were then distributed throughout the
empire to promote agriculture and sericulture. During the 18th century,
the Gengzhi tu became a popular subject among export paintings for
the Western market.
