A RARE IMPERIAL QIANGJIN AND TIANQI LACQUER ‘DRAGON’
BRUSH POT
JIAJING GILT AND INCISED SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566)
The brush pot is delicately incised and gilt around the exterior with three bracket-lobed
medallions, each enclosing a green and a yellow five-clawed dragon leaping above rocks emerging
from waves, flanking a shou character rising above a lingzhi between two flaming pearls, all against
a T-shaped fret ground. The mouth rim is decorated with a gilt keyfret border on black lacquer.
The base is lacquered black, incised and gilt in the centre with the reign mark.
7 ¬ in. (19.2 cm.) high, box
HK$150,000-200,000 US$20,000-26,000
During the mid-Ming period, the combination of qiangjin and tianqi techniques was often employed for
use on imperial lacquer, and the present brush pot is a good example of some of the best works produced
at the time. The intricate design is likely the prototype for later Wanli examples, such as a Wanli-marked
qiangjin brush pot of very similar design, also featuring three bracket-lobed medallions enclosing leaping
dragons, in the Palace Museum Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the
Palace Museum, Lacquer Wares of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2006, no. 182.
