               AN IMPORTANT AND RARE
               BEIJING OPAQUE WHITE
               AND RUBY-RED GLASS
               VASE

               QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The vase has a compressed body and is
supported on a splayed foot. The exterior
is decorated with a layer of ruby-red glass
to the opaque white ground in a geometric
pattern formed as a pierced basket.
               8 ¬ in. (22 cm.) high, box
               HK$300,000-500,000
               US$39,000-65,000
With the introduction of new techniques in
glass making, a much wider variety of colours
and shapes in glassworks emerged during
the early eighteenth century. The overlay
technique was more often applied on snuff
bottles than vases, and the present vase is
even more unusual for its distinctive geometric
design. Compare with another Beijing overlay
glass vase from the same period sold at
               Christie’s Hong Kong, 28 November 2018, lot
2934, which is decorated with opaque white
               splashes on a translucent ground.
