A RARE SANCAI AND BLUE-
GLAZED POTTERY FIGURE OF AN
EQUESTRIAN
TANG DYNASTY
the rider modeled as a foreigner with hands
raised as if holding reins, wearing a long blue-
glazed robe with a sash tied around the waist,
the face well-defined with details picked out in
black, the horse standing four square with head
slightly lowered, with pricked ears and bulging
eyes, covered with a creamy-white glaze, with
the head, mane and tail highlighted in amber,
the saddle streaked in green, amber and blue
height 14¼ in., 36.3 cm

Collection of Irene and earl (1908-1988) morse.

each horse rearing back on its hind legs and
animatedly raising one of its forelegs, the face
tilted with the eyes wide, the nostrils flaring,
and the mouth agape conveying a sense of
immediacy, the neck elegantly arched and the
mane falling to one side, the body with painted
harness, reigns, saddle and saddlecloth, fitted
wood base (2)

Gifted from erich maria remarque to marlene
Dietrich in the late 1940s (by repute).
