LACQUER ‘PRUNUS’ BOX AND COVER
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
of circular section, the thick layers of burgundy-
colored lacquer carved on the domed cover
with a dense network of blossoming prunus
branches, the blooms presented in different
directions and rendered in varying degrees of
openness heightening the naturalism of the
motif, the box similarly carved, the interiors and
base lacquered black (2)

A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER
RUYI SCEPTER
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
the undulating shaft and ruyi-form head coated
in numerous layers of deep-crimson lacquer
and carved in high relief with auspicious
motifs against a fine diaper ground, the
head displaying a selection of the ‘hundred
antiques’, the double-gourd vase in the center
inscribed daji (‘may you be extremely lucky’)
and set with several fruit-laden pomegranate
branches emerging from its narrow neck, the
center of the scepter’s shaft widening into a
shaped lozenge filled with a beribboned vase
containing blossoming prunus branches and a
bowl holding three Buddha-hand citrons, the
foliate-form terminus with a beribboned trio of
peaches and a bat, the remainder of the shaft
carved with the ‘eight Buddhist emblems’
