A rare and massive pair of cloisonné
enamel and gilt-bronze vases
Jiaqing/Daoguang
Each decorated overall on an even turquoise
ground enriched with gilt key-pattern, boldly
enamelled on the tall baluster bodies in mirror
image on one side with a large brightly-coloured
long-tailed standing phoenix amongst dense
upright leafy flowering clusters of peony, hibiscus,
daisy and chrysanthemum around the slender
body below the shoulder, the other side of each
vase with a tall upright tree of blossoming and
fruiting peach and pomegranate, the tall trumpet
necks with multi-coloured songbirds perched
with butterflies on tall branches of blossoming
chrysanthemum, magnolia and peony, dividing
horizontal bands of floral lappets below the rim
and a band of large archaistic lappets above the
shoulder, each neck set with two large gilt striding
dragons enriched with glass beads simulating
hardstones, standing on two pink-hardstone-inlaid
four-legged tall circular stands.
The vases 140cm (55in) high, 45.5cm (18in) diam;
overall height on the stands 224cm (88in) high (4).
