four crested long-tailed birds in flight amongst
flowering peony branches, between key-fret at the
rim and foot, the interior with a metal lining.

A cinnabar lacquer stem cup
16th century
Deeply carved around the body with scattered
precious objects including the ribboned Daoist
castanets in addition to a pair of lychee fruit and a
pair of rounded fruit, the stem with flowering leafy
branches and the interior lacquered black.

A lobed cinnabar lacquer ‘dragon’
box and cover
18th century
The cover delicately incised through the lacquer
and painted in a darker wash with a central front-
facing five-clawed dragon encircling the flaming
pearl amidst cloud scrolls, surrounded by four
further striding five-clawed dragons, all surrounded
by sixteen lobes, each containing a writhing five-
clawed dragon in pursuit of a pearl above bats and
clouds at the rim, the box with rockwork amidst
foaming waves in each lobe beneath further bats
and clouds at the rim, the interior lacquered black.
