The finely carved panels on the present lot would
have been part of a large and impressive suite
of furniture, comparable in carving technique to
examples from the Imperial collections from the
late Qing Dynasty. Compare very similar carved
‘dragon’ panels mounted on a cabinet in the
Palace Museum, Beijing, dated to the mid-Qing
period and which is believed to be the largest
example of zitan furniture created, illustrated by
Tian Jiaqing, Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing
Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, no.102.

cabinets in the bedroom behind the Yang Xin
Dian (Hall of Mental Cultivation) in the Forbidden
City and illustrated in The Complete Collection of
Treasures of the Palace Museum: Furniture of the
Ming and Qing Dynasties (II), Hong Kong, 2002,
no.249.
