A ‘TIANHUANG’ SEAL
Qing dynasty
The short rectangular seal body surmounted by a pair of intricately
carved mythical Peng birds, one side signed Laoju Han and dated
dingwei liuyue (sixth month, 1907), the seal face incised with two
lines of verse based on a poem by Tao Yuanming reading qing qin
heng chuang, zhuo you ban hu.

Laoju is the sobriquet of Hu Qu (1840-1910), who also went by the
name Hu Julin. He was a seal carver and engraver well-known for
emulating the calligraphic styles of the Qin and Han dynasties.
