Highly unusual in subject, this carving is an outstanding 清 白玉鳳凰獻壽把件
example of the carver’s dexterity in the medium to successfully
capture the differing surfaces of subtly textured textiles, soft
flowers and brittle branches. A range of modelling techniques
have been employed, from the fine incised diaper motifs of the
scrolls to the openwork of the prunus branches, to result in a
highly tactile and attractive miniature piece that would have
been valued by its scholar owner. A miniature jade pipa-shaped
brushrest, the cloth wrapping similarly carved with diaper
motifs, was sold in these rooms, 1st June 2015, lot 312.
