This elegantly carved brushrest exemplifies the aesthetic
taste of scholar-official of the Ming and Qing dynasties,
who sought objects to form part of the paraphernalia for
their ‘scholar’s desk’ that had a variety of functions, such
as brushrests, paperweights, as well as being works of art
in their own right. See a slightly larger jade carving of this
subject matter in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in
The Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum. Jade,
vol. 9, Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, pl.64, together with one
modelled as three peaks with chilong, pl. 66; and another
similar example was sold in these rooms, 9 October 2023,
lot 3663.
