Shi with two friends and an attendant in a # at-bottomed boat
# oating on calm waters towards a tall overhanging cli< -face,
the reverse inscribed with verses from the Chibi fu (‘Ode to the
Red Cli< ’), the base with a four-character mark (2)

A BLUE AND WHITE ‘QILIN’ ROULEAU VASE
QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD
the cylindrical body spiritedly painted in bright tones of cobalt
blue with two qilin, in mutual gaze, each standing on a rocky
promontory emerging from roiling, cresting waves, above an
open-beaked bird soaring low in search of prey, the neck with
a single raised ! llet and a series of crenellated, scroll and ruyi-
head borders
