A SMALL BRONZE RITUAL BELL,
YONGZHONG
LATE SPRING AND AUTUMN PERIOD,
6TH-5TH CENTURY BC
The heavily cast bell is of lenticular section
and is decorated on each side with a panel
containing three rows of projecting bosses
alternating with two rows of angular
S-shaped dragons, all within narrow raised
borders. Related dragon scrolls are cast on
the top, and the solid shank is encircled by a
round collar with a projecting loop handle
cast with an animal mask. The bell has a dark
brown patina and areas of malachite and
cuprite encrustation.
