156 A FINELY CAST BRONZE FIGURE OF A
MYTHICAL BEAST
LATE MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The beast reclines with all four hoofed feet
tucked under the body, which is covered
overall in fne scales. The bearded equine
face is turned to the left and has horns at
the center of the head backed by a mane of
fowing hair.

Compare the very similar recumbent bronze
fgure of a mythical beast, described as a paper
weight, of slightly smaller size (6.4 cm.) and
also dated to the Ming dynasty, in the Robert
H. Clague Collection, illustrated by R.D. Mowry
in China’s Renaissance in Bronze, Phoenix Art
Museum, 1994, p. 200, no. 46.

A BRONZE STANDING FIGURE OF
GUANYIN
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The fgure is cast standing on a double-lotus
base, and dressed in a voluminous robe with
a beaded ruyi necklace spanning the chest.
The deity has gentle facial features, her eyes
downcast in contemplation and hair coiled
into a topknot secured with a short hairpin.
