A YELLOW-GLAZED BLUE-GROUND ‘DRAGON’ DISH
QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-
1795)

The shallow, rounded sides rise to a slightly everted rim, and the interior is decorated with a
fve-clawed dragon leaping amidst clouds and fames in pursuit of a faming pearl, below two
dragons at a similar pursuit in the well, which are repeated on the exterior above a petal-lappet
border. The decoration is highlighted in a lemon-yellow glaze in contrast to the underglaze
blue ground.

9√ in. (25 cm.) diam.

$30,000-50,000

This design and color combination appears to be based on Kangxi examples, such as the dish illustrated
in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, vol. I, Tokyo, 1976, p. 349, no. 1047. Another Qianlong mark-and-period dish
with similar design was sold at Christie’s New York, 13-14 September 2012, lot 1489.
