DATED JIAZI CYCLICAL YEAR OF THE REPUBLIC PERIOD,
CORRESPONDING TO 1924 AND OF THE PERIOD 㚒᪪厍֬ᷡഎڶউ❨ࣇ卿⊑ຽ້ސႱӭቯߴ
The square columnar seal is surmounted by a recumbent mythical ࣇᙔ厍എڶ
beast. One of the vertical sides is incised with an inscription in seal
script signed Xiding and dated to the tenth month of cyclical jiazi 㪀༾↪卻 Ĝ 卼卿ໃ֬ᷡ卿⽚ᅿᄬǮࣽ⽚ᨃ㪰ǯ◙ᅤ㨒
year (1924). The seal face is carved in relief with a two-character ⥂卻ի◙႔Ⴊ卼にᰲ՞ǯऱᯎӮჺ卻 卼㙊卿㚁⩎៣㩴ᄭ
inscription, Taifu, ‘Emperor’s tutor’in seal script. मǯऱᯎࢦჺ卻 卼ᓄ⤔ـǯऱᯎࢦӲჺ卻 卼卿ᓄ⩎

Chen Baochen (1848-1935), hailing from Fuzhou, Fujian Ԝǯ⢴݉ჺ卻 卼卿ㅻ㊽◶ໝ㱦⥙ㅅǯ⢴Ӳჺ卻
province, was a late-Qing scholar-official. During the last years ჺ卼卿㪀༾↪ஙᬗጻ༈リ㑇卿ႽჇ卿㐁⡻●ఉ㳾㲬ǯᭆஇ݉
of the Qing dynasty, he served as the sub-chancellor in the
Grand Secretariat and as vice president of the Board of Rites. ჺ卻 卼卿᳖Ⴝ㙪ׅ卿խ㘤㪪ᵌܔ卿 ჺࢳᙻ༡卿ᇑ㙪
He was appointed as the tutor of the Last Emperor Puyi in ᳖Ǹᙔሉǹ㋚⽚ࣿǸഎჇǹ㈁㐩ǯ
1911, and remained a loyal supporter of the Qing dynasty for
the rest of his life. ॶᄮ݉卻 卼ǯᮅ㇛㞖ᵏ⥂ἓ⒢ឭ՞ǯࣥल།⇧卿ໃႱ
Zhou Kangyuan (1891-1961), pseudonym Xiding, was a ӭǮ㇛ӭ卿ᛮჺߣ⧤ಳ⏐Ǯಳᄬǯ䁗⽚⒢㈲㱦ǯ⠢㞖⒢ߴ‸Ǯ
renowned and prolific seal carver from the Jiangxi province ۔ᑃ㦈䀢卿ᯎࣇ卿ണ߉ऒ᧥ݱ㪿ǯӬ⊂ᯎࣇ㙓Նࢨᙹǯໄӽ
active during the late Qing and Republic periods. It is recorded ᝳǶ⒢㈲㱦ࣇໄǷǮǶ⒢㈲㱦ࣇໄ⦛㫀ǷǮǶऒ⁒۔ᑃワǷǯ
that he had carved more than five thousand seals during his
life-time. He is known for his archaistic carving style inspired by
inscriptions found on archaic bronzes and seals.
