A RARE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA

NEPAL OR TIBET, CIRCA 15TH CENTURY

This figure is solidly cast, standing on his right leg with his hip swaying
slightly. In his left arm he clutches the end of his robe, while his right hand
is lowered in varadamudra, the gesture of charity. The thin drapery of his
sanghati is rendered with folds and fluttering hems, and his dhoti is only
visible at his shins. His face has an aquiline nose, heavy-lidded eyes and
long earlobes, and his hair is in tight curls that rise up to his ushnisha.

11 in. (28 cm.) high
