                                         No.  126.

               Scratched upon a Water Jar of stoneware made at
          Karatzu about 1800 a.d.       Hichi-jiu-ni sai Ni-raku tsukuru.
          Made by Niraku, yz years old.
               The kiln of Karatzu is situated in the northern part of
          the province of Hizen it is said to have been founded in the
                                  ;
          seventh century, and it was here that glazed pottery was
          first made. So closely is this ancient factory associated with
          the manufacture of pottery, that its name has given rise to
          the use, in the southern part of Japan, of the term Karatziimono^
          to signify pottery in general, just as Setomono is used in other
          parts of the country. The latter word is derived from Seto,
          a town in Owari, where most of the wares of that province
           are manufactured, and mono, which signifies articles or things.
