A FINELY CARVED SHOUSHAN SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF GUANYIN AND CHILD
17TH-18TH CENTURY

The seated fgure is shown holding a child on her raised right knee. She is dressed in long,
loose robes that are incised with foliate decoration and fall in folds around the body. Her face
is carved with a slight smile and downcast eyes under upswept hair tied into a high chignon
and partially covered by a long cowl centered by a tiara. The stone is of pale honey-brown
color, and the separately made soapstone base, of barbed quatrefoil outline, is of dark brown
color.
