Bottle Dthis four-sided bottle has a trumpet-shaped mouth
18th century, Joseon and neck on top of a flat shoulder that then slants down
TL results: fired between 100 & 200 years ago diagonally and angles again into vertical sides. The slanted
Porcelain with underglaze cobalt decoration shoulders are decorated with four outlined panels with ten-
H: 21.7 cm, W: 6.9 cm drils depicted in each. The sides are painted with traditional
“mountains and water” (Kr: sansu, Ch: shān shuĭ) landscape
scenes. Boats with sails are depicted floating in water among
trees and mountains under a moonlit sky. Although there are
no painted borders, the scene on each side is independent of
the side next to it. The base is flat and free of glaze.
The underglaze decoration on this bottle was applied with
cobalt and intended to turn blue during the firing process.
However, it has turned out a grayish color here due to mis-
firing in the kiln. This bottle was used for holding wine and
would likely have been owned by a Confucian scholar famil-
iar with Chinese painting genres. The collector’s father had
used this as a wine bottle.
