Zhu Qizhan focused on oil painting in his early years but returned to
traditional Chinese painting after the 1950s. Landscapes and still lifes
were among the popular subjects of his paintings. In calligraphy, he
excelled at regular and running scripts with vigorous strokes. With
his artistic pursuits of “uniqueness, strength and simplicity”, Zhu’s
artworks feature rustic, free and brisk brushworks, as well as bright
and sharp colours. In 1995, at the age of 105, Zhu held his sold
exhibitions at the British Museum in London and the Asian Art Museum
of San Francisco.
