JAPANESE KIMONO
19th to early 20th century
Comprising: an open-front tunic decorated in
couched gold threads with shou characters
on a brown ground with cuffs of fruits
and bats on a blue ground; a lady’s robe,
embroidered with butterflies and peony
roundels on a brown ground with ivory
ground collar and hems; a semi-formal robe,
jifu, decorated with nine five-clawed dragons
in couched gold threads amidst clouds and
Daoist emblems, bats and cloud scrolls,
above foaming waves tossed with auspicious
objects and a lishui stripe hem; together with
a Japanese kimono embroidered with birds,
flowers and rocks on an ivory ground. The
kimono: 163cm (64 1/4in) long (4).

The jacket in woven gilt thread with ten
dragons to the front, back and deep sleeves,
amongst auspicious emblems and above
crashing waves; the apron skirt woven with
288 panels of dragons and phoenix with Peking
knot precious objects. The jacket: 112cm
(44in) long (2).
