the globular body supported on three splayed tapering legs and rising to a short neck, the shoulder set with a pair of small handles
in the form of simplified dragons, covered overall with a lustrous white glaze, Japanese openwork silver cover (2)

Dr. James D. Thornton was born in 1921 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. A successful physician who traveled frequently, he began
collecting Chinese ceramics in the 1960s. Purchasing primarily from Frank Caro, successor to C.T. Loo, he amassed a formidable
collection of Qing dynasty imperial porcelains. Based in Chicago, Dr. Thornton was a member of the illustrious group of collectors
known as “The Orientals” which actively supported the Art Institute of Chicago. Generous with his collection, Dr. Thornton, loaned
