           As a corollary to the yearly process of the four    seasons, we have the ‘four sections
        (periods)’ (jue), each of 15 days, which initiate these seasons – the periods of the summer
        and winter solstices and of the spring and autumn equinoxes. The first day of each of
        these periods was known as the ‘four separations’, and on these days sexual intercourse
        was forbidden.
