                                                             The first designed with a center front opening, embroidered on black
                                                             silk in satin stitch with dragon roundels and colorful flower sprays,
                                                             the collar, sleeves, and lower hems lined with white silk bands
                                                             embroidered with further flowers (toning to white silk); the second
                                                             a black ground jacket, worked in various colored silk and metallic
                                                             threads, embroidered to the front, back and shoulders with a front
                                                             facing dragon medallion, the sleeves and lower hems bordered with
                                                             simplified lishui forms and ocean waves (soiling, tears, staining).

                                                             Late Qing dynasty
                                                             Possibly made from a dark blue brocade man’s robe, embroidered
                                                             with large-scale floral sprays, butterflies and other insects in loose
                                                             satin stitch while flowering branches and butterflies in fine threads fill
                                                             the black silk border bands, the polychrome embroidered ivory ground
                                                             sleeve bands highlighted with gilt-wrapped threads (wear, soiling).

           Sewn with a center front opening, the flowers, auspicious emblems
           and butterflies embroidered in a combination of knotted and satin
           stitches with outlines in couched white threads, the sleeve bands of
           ivory satin embroidered with garden rocks, butterflies and birds on
           flowering and fruiting branches (wear, soiling, loose threads).
