TWO SATSUMA BALUSTER VASES
One by Setsuzan and one by Tozan, Meiji era (1868-1912),
late 19th/early 20th century
Decorated in enamels and gilt, the first a reticulated baluster vase with
two large panels, the first depicting a group of women cooling off from
the summer heat, the other panel of two women and child enjoying
a leisurely stroll during the momijigari (maple viewing) season, the
cover similarly reticulated and applied with a floriform panel enclosing
a woman examining a textile, signed on the base Setsuzan, 16.5cm
(6½in) high; the second with a wide band enclosing a continuous
scene of figures of different classes at leisure during the hanami
(cherry-viewing season), the neck and foot with overlapping brocade,
signed on the base with seal Nihon Tozan, 15.2cm (6in) high. (3).

A SATSUMA SMALL PLATE
By Ryokuzan, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Decorated in enamels and gilt with a representation of Shirasuga
Station from the Hoeido Tokaido gojusan tsugi (53 Stations of the
Tokaido Road) print series by Hiroshige, enclosed within a fan
cartouche on a ground of blossoming autumn plants beneath a
bamboo sudare (blind); signed on the underside in gilt Satsuma yaki
Ryokuzan tsukuru. 18.3cm (7 1/8in) diam.
