A METAL-INLAID GOLD-LACQUER
FOUR-CASE INRO
By a member of the Kajikawa Family,
Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1800
The gold-lacquer ground decorated in
hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with kirikane
accents, depicting Choryo (Chinese: Zhang
Liang) crossing a bridge on horseback,
holding the scroll gifted to him by Kosekiko
(Chinese: Huangshigong), Kosekiko kneeling
towards Choryo under a pine tree grasping
his retrieved shoe, the dragon who saved
Choryo from the river looking up at him from
the waves, Choryo and Kosekiko inlaid in soft
metal; signed Kajikawa saku
(Made by Kajikawa).

active 1818-1830), Edo period (1615-1868),
early/mid 19th century
The black-lacquer ground decorated in
polychrome and gold takamaki-e with a
boatman on one side, hauling a covered
boat amongst reeds on the reverse; signed
Tatsuke Kokyo kore o zu gyonen hachijusansai
(Tatsuke Kokyo painted this at age 83).
