SINGLE-CASE INRO
Style of Shibata Zeshin, Meiji era (1868-1912),
late 19th century
In the form of a partly used ink-cake, carved in
relief on one side with a tiger standing among
rocks and trees, its head raised and turned
back, sniffing the air for prey, the reverse with
a dragon among clouds in similar style, the
interior of black lacquer and the cord runners
formed by silver rings; unsigned.

by Kano Naonobu (1607-1650), Edo period
(1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912),
19th century
The saya decorated with Hotei and two karako
(Chinese boys), one dancing on the reverse,
the outlines of the figures inlaid in slivers
of shell with accents of coloured and gold
lacquer, each case divided in two sections
and lacquered red; inscribed Naonobu
with a kao. 5.1cm (2in) high.
