Meiji era (1868-1912),
late 19th/early 20th century
The rectangular cover decorated with two
geese in flight against the full moon, inlaid
in high relief of gilt and silver, the bottom
right corner signed with chiselled characters
Kageyasu with a kao; the base stamped with
the Nogawa Company mark.

A BRONZE INKWELL IN THE FORM
OF A TREE STUMP
By Komin, Meiji era (1868-1912),
late 19th/early 20th century
Raised on three tall feet, cast to simulate
the texture of a gnarled stump of wood, the
central hinged cover applied with a copper
crab crawling over the surface and opening to
reveal within a removable glass well, a second
bronze crab on the side; signed Komin with
a kao within a bronze rectangular reserve.

The cover decorated in high-relief cloisonné-
enamel, silver, bronze, and gilt with a solitary
butterfly hovering over flowering stems
of chrysanthemums, the inside corner of
the cover engraved with a leaf caught in a
spider’s web; signed with chiselled characters
Kazutoshi with a gold seal.
