A BRASS FIGURE OF BUDDHA Donning a heavy Gandharan-style robe, this ancient bronze has
CENTRAL ASIA, CIRCA 6TH CENTURY esoteric iconography. While clearly depicting the Buddha, stylized
Himalayan Art Resources item no.2440 flames or lotus buds project from his domed ushnisha, shoulders, and
8.2 cm (3 1/8 in.) high hands. As flames, they could reference one of his miracles performed
at Sravasti; as flowers, they could identify the eons-old Dipankara
HKD80,000 - 120,000 Buddha. The bronze’s style and thin casting are consistent with many
of the eccentric treasures found across the ancient Silk Roads.
