Lui Shou Kwan’s love for the sea is noted in many of his
paintings, from paying tribute to J. M. W. Turner in Storm
in 1946 to the prolific body of works depicting the Hong
Kong harbour, such as Aberdeen in 1963. This can also
be attributed to his vicinity to the sea, as Lui worked at
The Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company from 1949
to 1966 as an inspector. In Fishing Port, Lui portrayed a
quaint scene of fishing junks mooring at a typhoon shelter,
during the time when fishing was still the livelihood of
many in Hong Kong.
