A large velvet ‘lotus and bats’
rectangular wall hanging
18th/19th century
Woven in three lengths of velvet of a deep and
rich purplish hue, the fully blossoming central
lotus issuing from a leafy meander further
set with six smaller lotus blooms amid bats
in flight, all enclosed within three borders,
the inner with highly stylised square chilong
scrolls, the middle with lotus flowers on foliate
stems and the outer with a geometric keyfret
design.
