                           FIGURE OF SHOULAO, KANGXI
 China, 19th century. Of rectangular form, densely carved in relief
 and reticulated with a traditional scene of noble figures and their   China, 1661-1722. Shoulao is carved standing with his characteristic tall

                     This unusual material comes from the fossilized tusks of the extinct Paleolithic-
                     era wooly mammoth. It is recorded that in the Kangxi period, Chinese traders
                     went to Siberia seeking to buy mammoth tooth ivory. The tusk is difficult to
                     hollow out and polish, making statues carved from this material extremely rare.

 reticulated manner on all sides with various figures in leisurely

                           CHILD’ GROUP, MING
                     China, 16th-17th century. The standing bodhisattva carrying a child, wearing
                     voluminous wide-sleeved robes, the child clutching a lotus spray, the ivory
                     patinated to a warm golden-brown color.


                     Condition: Extensive wear, losses and age cracks. The base with wear and
