A YELLOW-GROUND EMBROIDERED
CUSHION SECTION MOUNTED AS A TABLE
SCREEN
CIRCA 1800
The cushion face is decorated with a gilt-couched
panel enclosing an embroidered central peach roundel
surrounded by scrolling lotus. The outer border is
decorated with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang,
amongst lotus scrolls.

579 A BLUE-GROUND EMBROIDERED SILK
COVERLET
188 CANTON, CIRCA 1800
The coverlet is embroidered with a central roundel
enclosing a pair of Buddhist lions playing with a brocade
ball surrounded by phoenixes, birds and butterfies
amongst fowers and lingzhi fungus. The four corners are
each decorated with a Buddhist lion.

A GROUP OF THREE SILK BROCADES
AND FOUR APPLIQUES
19TH-20TH CENTURY
The group comprises: a red and green-ground silk
cover embroidered with chrysanthemum scroll; a
blue-ground cover embroidered with stylised foral and
geometric panels; and a midnight-blue-ground silk
cover embroidered with a central panel of Buddhist lions
surrounded by cranes, birds, hares and various fowers; a
pair of embroidered peony and phoenix appliqués; and a
pair of embroidered peony and butterfies appliqués.

PROVENANCE:
Collection of Dr Richard Brown, a Canadian doctor and
missionary who purchased them as he travelled and
worked across Asia in the 1930s and while working with
Dr. Norman Bethune (1890-1939) in China.
The pieces were purchased from his widow, Elsa Brown
by the vendor’s mother and grandmother.
